Support for adopters


Blackburn with Darwen Council recognises that some adoptive parents and their children may require ongoing support or assistance at specific times. We are here to support adoptive families in Blackburn with Darwen, whether or not you have been in contact with us before; adoption support can be requested at any point. We are committed to offering a range of Post Adoption Support Services and advice.

Following the making of an Adoption Order, you can request an assessment of need at any point and we will also make sure that you receive regular information about the support and activities provided by Blackburn with Darwen post-adoption workers.

    Support services for approved adopters and their children:
  • Provide a newsletter to keep adoptive parents in touch with services.
  • Coffee Mornings, opportunity for adopters to meet other adopters, on an informal basis, children are also welcome.
  • An annual social event, for the family.
  • Regular support groups for adoptive parents.
  • Community based support group/advice for Asian adopters.
  • Links with Education services for advice on education issues.
  • Links with the child and adolescent mental health services and psychology services.
  • Training and workshops on a range of issues relating to adoption.
  • Co-ordination of and support with letterbox contact and annual reviews of contact arrangement.
