Graffiti

What is graffiti?
Graffiti is an act of vandalism and refers to ANY drawings, messages, scribbles or 'tags' that are painted, written or carved on walls and other surfaces.

Why is graffiti bad?
Graffiti is a crime. It is estimated that it costs the UK over £1 billion per year to clean up. It can be a sign of a neglected neighbourhood and can help promote fear and can lead to a lack of respect for the place in which people live, work and play.

What is being done about it?
The council will try and remove graffiti within 24 hours if the graffiti is considered offensive, though it is not always necessarily the responsibility of the council to do so. Anyone caught doing graffiti within the borough can face a fine of £75 or even prosecution. We will also prosecute repeat offenders and apply anti-graffiti coatings to properties on new developments.

If you wish to report anyone doing graffiti please call B-Direct on 01254 585921.
